"remember your history" she bellowed......

"Remember your history"......  I heard bellowing from her belly so deep yet high pitched and  each word echoed in my ears.......  this woman dressed in period clothing marched with her "group" in our annual labor day parade.... this group....it stood out ....it stood out amongst the other "units....

Each person in the group talked to the crowd as they passed...... "Happy Labor Day" with a nod....
but they did not look happy ....solemn was more the word to describe the beautiful ,  yet sadness that was passing my lens.

they were serious

they had a message.... a message they were trying to convey ....it is and was "labor" day.  Everythingn about the word ..."labor"  says "working.  Everything about this group reminded us that nothing comes easy or cheap ....especially labor.

The funny thing is.... the part of history that my children are from..... is this little parade.  This celebration of our town.

This little parade is part of my history.... my children's history..parades as they know it.  Unlike the elaborate mardi gras and irish parades of my teen-aged years...that were made up mostly of people you did not know and would never know..... our little town of "Powhatan" has a parade that is made up mostly of those you know or will know at some point in your life.

Every float or tractor or person tells a story....  of small town life.... in America,  In 2014
and every photo allows me ...and hopefully my children to "remember their history"

We make "history" every day that we live....we make memories ....we make smiles and tears...
yes .... lets remember our history and be happy for small towns in America that remind us to do so.....
